Pulham Herefords Aprons – this year’s must have item of clothing!
As a special Christmas present all our beef customers who ordered over 10kg of beef in December were given a Pulham Herefords apron. We have enjoyed seeing photos on social media over the festive period of our customers wearing their aprons. This photo shows John calving a joint of Pulham Herefords beef. Yum yum!
The snow didn’t stop us traveling to Shrewsbury and it was well worth the journey!
With the snow starting to fall, Philip set off on the long journey to the Shrewsbury Christmas Calf Show and Designer Genes Sale. Pulham Blossom 20th did us proud in the show ring, winning her class and picking up Reserve Female Champion on her debut outing. She continued to exceed expectations in the Designer Genes Sale ring where she was the top priced horned female selling for a fantastic £5,460! Our other heifer entered into the sale, Pulham 1 Starlet 6th, also sold very well at £4,410. Thank you to Robert Norman, who helped Philip with the showing and Nick Griffiths, who helped with the Sale. Unfortunately Laura was unable to attend through illness and was watching the sale online nervously at home!

Repeat of last year’s Junior Bull success at National Show, plus Intermediate Female Champion
Pulham Powerhouse and Pulham Pleasure won their respective bull calf classes at the National Hereford Show, Tenbury, with Pulham Powerhouse then taking the Junior Bull Championship. This was a repeat of last year’s results achieved by Pulham Northern Lights and Pulham Norfolk. It is interesting to note that Powerhouse and Northern Lights share the same dam, Clipston Tiara R16, Horned Female of the Year 2015. Pleasure and Norfolk also share the same dam, Clipston Tiara P17. We look forward to this year’s calves with anticipation! Pulham Blossom 19th fought off strong competition to be awarded the Intermediate Female Championship.

Farewell to Haven Hotspur
Haven Hotspur has been part of our herd for 5 years and we reluctantly decided that the time had come to move him on with many daughters now in the herd. We are very pleased to have sold him to AG, LE & AA Gifford, Twilight Herefords, Devon. He has been a herd changing bull for us and we wish the Gifford family well with him.

Grianan Females arrive from Ireland
Grianan Orange P752 took our eye when we saw her in action at the Irish National Show, Tullamore in 2016, where she was first and Reserve All Ireland Heifer. Before she came over to England she had more success for T & A Fitzgerald when they took her to the Irish National Calf Show where judge Richard Mann awarded her Overall Reserve Female Champion. We look forward to breeding from this very special heifer. Also purchased was Grianan Agnes M 657.
New Females from Clipston
When the opportunity arose to purchase some more females from Rodney and Rose Westaway we couldn’t resist! The new group consisted of a heifer and 3 cows, including former National Hereford Show Female Champion Clipston Pansy M9.

It was an honour to host the Midlands and East Anglia Hereford Breeders Association AGM in October. A special day for Beth
It was a very special Aylsham Show this year, with Beth’s heifer winning her class and being made Reserve Female Champion. Beth has been taking Pulham Princess Pansy 4th in Young Handlers all season and “Princess” has been purchased for Beth by her Grandpa. Beth confidently led “Princess” in the class and then in the Championship and was delighted with the result!
First ever Championship won at National Hereford Show, Tenbury
It was a great National Hereford Show for Pulham Herefords, with 2 first prizes, 3 second prizes and 3 third prizes, but the best moment of the day was Pulham Northern Lights being awarded the Junior Bull Championship. Northern Lights has a very promising pedigree, being the progeny of the 2015 Horned Bull and Female of the Year, Trillick Knockout and Clipston Tiara R16.

A great day for Haven Hotspur
Having only been pulled out from the cows less than a week before, our senior stock bull, Haven Hotspur, showed himself well at the National Hereford Show and came away with the Senior Male Championship and Reserve Male Championship. As well as looking the part himself, his daughter Pulham Blossom 10th, also won her class. A great show for sire and daughter.

Tiara wins again

Calving starts with two “firsts” for the UK
Our first calf of the year was Pulham 1 Magnum, to our knowledge the first Days Calibre G74 calf to be born in the UK. Days Calibre is an Australian Hereford National Show and Sale Grand Champion and is the Australian record priced polled bull, selling for $90,000. Magnum is out of Solpoll 1 Starlet K15, who in turn is out of a top Solpoll cow, Starlet C3 and sired by the $270,000 Remitall Super Duty 42S, needless to say we will be watching this calf with interest. Born 4 days later was Pulham Pansy 6th, the first Yarram Unique F181 calf to be born in the UK. Yarram Unique F181 has been retained by Yarram Park and semen has been used in Australia including at Bowmont, Centennial, Courallie and Truro. Pansy 6th is out of Clipston Pansy L10 who was dam to our successfully shown heifer Pulham Pansy 2nd, making her another one to watch.

Trillick Knockout imported from Ireland
We had a fantastic trip to Ireland in July, accompanied by Les Cook of Albany Herefords and saw some fantastic herds of Hereford cattle and were treated to some very generous hospitality. The end result of the trip was the arrival of Trillick Knockout, bred by JJ Farrell, a few months later. We went to Ireland looking for a new Junior Sire and asked Les to come with us to give us a second opinion, as it turned out Les liked Knockout so much we ended up making a joint purchase. Knockout was first, Male Champion and Reserve Supreme Champion at Moate Show, first at Royal Meath Show (Trim) and second at the Irish National Show.

First Red Rosette at the National Hereford Show
Pulham Hazel 8th, out of Badlingham Hazel 25th and sired by Clipston Krespian, fought off the competition to give us our first ever red rosette at the National Hereford Show, Tenbury. New females from Clipston
We are extremely pleased to have had the opportunity to buy some more females from Rodney and Rose Westaway’s renowned Clipston Herd. In April we collected 2 cows, Clipston Pansy H18 and Clipston Tiara J3, both in calf to Dieulacresse Goodenough. Then in June we brought 2 in calf heifers and 2 maiden heifers back to Pulham. We are delighted with all these purchases and are particularly excited about Clipston Tiara R16 an eye catching heifer with plenty of scale.

Supreme Champion Hereford at Hadleigh Show
We had a fantastic day at Hadleigh Show, Solpoll 1 Starlet K8 was the Female Champion and Pulham King Kong was the Male Champion. Starlet went on to win the Supreme Championship with King Kong in Reserve. To top the day off we won the prize for the best collection of cattle exhibits and Naomi Lewis, who helps us at the Shows, was the Champion Young Handler, a great day for “Team Pulham”!
Beefeater sold to Holkham Estate
Having had a crop of calves from Badlingham Beefeater this Spring, and more to come, we have sold him on to Holkham Estate, Norfolk, to join their suckler herd. We were sorry to see him go but know he won’t miss us, there was a field of 30 females waiting for him!

Midlands and East Anglia Herd Competition success
The judge of the Midlands and East Anglia Hereford Breeders’ Association herd competition, Hertfordshire Simmental breeder David Sapsed, placed us third in the medium sized section and awarded us two individual prizes. Haven Hotspur was judged the best junior bull and one of our foundation females, Badlingham Hazel 26th was judged the best cow suckling a calf.
Reserve Senior Female at the National Hereford Show
Clipston Diadem K5 gave us our best National Hereford Show to date, by being made the Reserve Senior Female Champion. Pulham Dowager 1st also came a respectable 5th in a strong class of ten September heifer calves. The long journey and the compulsory Tenbury rain (putting a tent up in a storm is not that much fun!) did not dampen what is always a fantastic Show and a great opportunity to meet up with fellow Hereford breeders.

Midlands and East Anglia workshop at Pulham Herefords
We were pleased to host a Midlands and East Anglia Hereford Breeders’ Association (M.E.A.H.B.A.) workshop at our farm where approximately 40 people were in attendance. The day started with a excellent clipping demonstration given by professional showman Steve Edwards. After lunch experienced and highly respected stockman Robert Clarke and Steve Edwards talked about the conformation of Haven Hotspur and Pulham Blossom 5th. We then went on to stock judge 3 groups of females and listen to the placings and reasons given by master judge Robert Clarke. The stockjudging competition was won by Tommy Smith with Eleanor Fowell being the highest placed young member (under 18). Youngsters and new breeders were then given the chance to lead animals in simulated breed classes. Established breeder Les Cook did a brilliant job in the role of judge and explained how classes are conducted and what he looks for in a handler. Handlers were assisted by Robert Clarke, Steve Edwards and young breeders Sarah Cook and James Ludgate. The day was rounded off by watching the Grand National where attendees took park in a sweepstake with the proceeds being donated to the M.E.A.H.B.A. Prizes for the stock judging and sweepstake were kindly donated by Chapelfield Vets. We would like to thank everyone that helped out with the workshop, particularly young member Naomi Lewis who helped us wash animals in the snow prior to the event!
Heifers from Ireland
A day trip to the Solpoll herd in Northern Ireland resulted in the purchase of two Starlet in calf heifers. Solpoll 1 Starlet H18 is sired by highly successful and impressive bull Solpoll 1 Dynamite and out of Solpoll 1 Starlet B10 who was Northern Ireland’s Female of the Year in 2007. Solpoll 1 Starlet H18 is in calf to Fisher 1 Charlie. Solpoll 1 Starlet H15 is out of a Udel 1 R51 Vindicator cow and is in calf to Panmure 1 Henry.

Lowesmoor females introduced
Having admired Michael Clarke’s two show heifers over the 2012 season we decided to visit his herd. We were very impressed with the cattle we saw and were pleased to purchase a cow, a in calf heifer and a yearling heifer. Michael was reluctant to part with either of the show heifers but did agree to sell us one of their dams, Lowesmoor 1 Olive 545. These are the first polled females we have purchased and we look forward to seeing what they produce for us.

AG Wright & Sons Dispersal Sale – Plan B!
We went to the AG Wright and Sons dispersal sale of the Badlingham, Hermitage and Hillrow herds with the intention of purchasing a couple of females, but along with many others came home disappointed. Having picked out approximately 10 females with bloodlines we wished to add to our herd, we tried very hard to purchase some, but to no avail. Not wishing to miss out on the opportunity of introducing some of the bloodlines we had hoped for, we made a quick decision and purchased stock bull Badlingham Beefeater, therefore introducing bloodlines containing PDHR 9322 DOMINO 69G and Badlingham Blossom 96th. Having gone to purchase females and making a quick decision to purchase a bull, when the hammer went down we had feelings of excitement and shock at what we had done and started to think of where we were going to house him over the winter! However after the shock wore off we were very happy with our purchase. Beefeater has put some condition on since we bought him and has served his first cow, with us, he will be used on half the herd after they have calved in the spring.
Midlands and East Anglia Hereford Breeders’ Association Herd Competition 2012
We were delighted to have been judged the 2nd best small herd in the area by judge Mr Jim Barber. Congratulations to all the competition winners, particularly Thornby Farms who won the Pulham Trophy presented by ourselves for the Best Stock Bull under 30 months.

New home for Hercules
Having seen Pulham Hercules at Royal Norfolk Show, where he was Supreme Champion and Inter Breed Reserve Junior Native Champion, he was purchased by David Smith, Laxfield Herefords. Having had lots of welcome advice and tips from David at Shows over the past few years about cattle confirmation we were delighted that he chose to purchase one of our bulls. We took Hercules to the National Hereford Show, Tenbury, where he stood 3rd in a strong class. He then went with David to his new home in Wales.

Supreme Champion Hereford and Inter-Breed success at Royal Norfolk Show with Pulham Hercules
We had a fantastic Norfolk Show with Pulham Hercules winning the Supreme Hereford Championship. There were 47 Herefords entered who were judged by Andrew Owen of Church Preen Herefords. On the second day Hercules was awarded the Reserve Junior Native Bull Champion. Pulham Blossom 4th was 1st in her class and Hercules and Blossom won the pairs class. Pulham Hazel 4th was added to make a group of three, which won the exhibitor bred group of three and best group of three sired by the same sire or out of the same dam. A great show for Huggy Bear’s calves.

Sarabande Huggy Bear moves to pastures new
We had feelings of mixed emotion when we delivered Sarabande Huggy Bear to his new home this month. Having had him on the farm as our stock bull for the last two and a half years it was sad to see him go, but we are very pleased that his genetics will continue to be used in the Clipston herd, where we know he will be well looked after by Rodney and Rose Westaway. It can clearly be seen in his calves that he has done the job he was bought for – to stamp a consistent type across the herd, producing beefy animals with an excellent back end. In total we will have 4 crops of calves from Huggy, meaning he will have a great influence over our herd in the coming years through his daughters.

Haven Hotspur sale agreed
We are excited to announce that the Lewis family,The Haven, Dilwyn, Hereford, have agreed to sell us a half share in Haven Hotspur. We chose Haven Hotspur to complement our existing bloodlines as his dam, Haven Curly 72nd, is sired by Badlingham Beamer. Hotspur was first in his class at the National Calf Show and was part of the Haven’s winning group of three, sired by Mawarra Vice Admiral.

Arrival of two new female lines from the Border herd
Following our purchase of Mouboon Oyster Lass E75, who goes back to Border breeding, we visited Stan and Helen Quan the day after the Society’s October Show and Sale and decided to introduce some more Border bloodlines into our herd. We were very impressed with the herd who had just been placed first in the National Hereford Herd Competition. We decided upon two yearling heifers Border Pansy G39 and Border Miss Arrow G78, both have terminal indexes in the top 10% of the breed and have excellent weight figures.
November 2010
In-calf heifers purchased from the Clipston Herd
We were delighted to purchase two in-calf heifers from Rodney and Rose Westaway, which we believe are outstanding and will help to take our herd forward. Look out for the Diadem and Lobelia families which will be added to our females page in the near future. This brings our Clipston families up to three following the purchase of two Pansy maiden heifers earlier in the year.

Haven Dowager 161st arrives
On the eve of the National Horned Hereford Show, Tenbury, we had the pleasure of being shown round the Haven herd by Edward and Ben Lewis. We picked out a heifer calf still on it’s dam, Haven Dowager 137th. We were delighted when Edward agreed to sell her to us at the Show, especially as we had just seen her half brother, Haven Cavalier, also out of Haven Dowager 137th, win the Male Championship. Her sire Haven Empire was an imported embryo from Canada who won his class when shown at Three Counties in 2009.

Purchase of females from Stapelford Dispersal Sale
Philip went on the long journey to Devon to view the females that Mr J Romans had purchased from AG Wright & Sons. He returned with a full trailer after successfully bidding for Badlingham Blossom 119th, Badlingham Bonny 89th and their calves at foot.
“THE dispersal of the Stapelford Herd of Hereford cattle at Hatherleigh attracted buyers from all over the UK. Catching everybody’s eye was a 2006 first-calving heifer and her May-born heifer calf. Badlingham Bonny 89th eventually sold to Pulham Herefords, of Norfolk, at £2,030.” Western Morning News Nov 5th 2009.
